Each May, Better Hearing and Speech Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of speech language pathologists and audiologists in providing treatment.
The Depew Speech and Language Department will be celebrating in our schools by sharing daily fun facts, providing information and tips to classroom teachers, and promoting activities and resources to help everyone celebrate all month long.
According to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), nearly one in 12 children ages 3-17 has a communication disorder (ASHA Leader, 2015). Problems with articulation, language, auditory processing, voice, speech fluency, phonological awareness, and/or hearing may adversely affect academic performance. Children with speech and language impairments are 4-5 times more likely than their peers to experience other language-learning disabilities, which may include significant reading problems (National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders).
