Student leaders (LEAD) and members of the art club recently completed a collaborative project to beautify Depew Middle School. Students painted rocks with bright colors and inspirational words, which were placed in a rock garden outside the middle school entrance. The idea was developed by students of the art club with advisors Dawn Thurnherr and Christie Maryanski, and with LEAD members and middle school Leader In Me TOSA, Sal Carlino. Students met to brainstorm ideas on how to make the entrance to the school more inviting, and the idea of the rock garden was born. The students stayed after school on consecutive days painting the rocks. Once all the rocks were completed, they were then placed outside the entrance, along with signs that emphasize leadership and scholarship. More than 30 students were involved in the project, across all three grades. Leadership and scholarship go hand in hand at DMS, and reinforce the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People the district has embraced over the last few years.
