Recently, the Potsdam Pitches, a co-ed cappella group made up of students from SUNY Potsdam, ended their winter tour at Depew High School. The artist provided a 40-minute master class for the high school choir students.
The singers broke into small groups scattered throughout the music wing as they worked together to lean a cappella song. By the end of the sessions, the students were signing a new song in a cappella style including vocal percussion, back-ups. Sophomore Mitchell Vannelli took a chance and tried out for the lead solo.
Vannelli stated “It was the most fun he has had singing.”
That same day, the Depew Middle School choirs, including grades 6 through 8, came to the auditorium with the high school singers for a performance by the Pitches. Students grooved and sang along as the group performed everything from Disney music, to jazz, to Ed Sheeran.
Students asked questions about a cappella music and the ensemble. The grand finale was a joint performance of the That’s What I like About You with all of the high school students from the master class.
The performance brought the house down and the screams of excitement from the middle school singers. The entire experience was truly inspirational.
