Depew Middle School crowned the newest winners in the Annual Freedom in America Essay and Poster Contest. This DMS tradition, now 46 years strong, showcased 10 seventh- and eighth-graders, who stood out among their peers. These finalists showed the Depew Middle School community their interpretations of the theme, “Freedom in America.”
The esteemed panel of judges included Superintendent Dr. Jeff Rabey, Depew Mayor Jesse Nikonowicz, Deputy Mayor Kevin Peterson, Depew Trustee Audrey Hamernik, Erie County Legislator John Bruso, Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard, Depew School Board Trustees Donna Kapinos, Patrick Law, and Todd Bush. The final judge was eleventh-grader Samantha Maroshick, who won the essay contest in 2014. The assembled audience of students, staff, families and guests were extremely impressed by the hard work and talent exhibited in the essays and posters.
In the poster contest, first place was awarded to seventh-grader Pam McCarty ($100 cash prize and a plaque), second place was seventh-grader Samantha Reinhardt ($75), and the three runners-up were seventh-graders Kiera Szuba, Gina Florian and Destiny Clark ($50 each).
