Did you ever wonder what positions make up Depew’s Village government? Who are the people who hold those positions?
Why do they choose to be involved? What do they actually do?
The Depew School District and the Village of Depew are joining forces to award 16 students, from all three school buildings, the opportunity to “shadow” a member of our local village government.
The job of the individuals in the Village of Depew government have many responsibilities. These officials are given the power by the voters of Depew to handle the day-to-day issues and events that are part of all local governments across our great country. However, many people, especially young people, know very little about their local government. Educating our youth at an early age to understand local government and how they might be able to positively affect the community in which they are being raised, can hopefully lead to their participation and awareness as American citizens when they reach voting age. Young people will be adding their “voice” to the American conversation revolving around government at the local and national level. If they begin to participate and understand that role now, locally, then they will understand the benefits this country provides them.
Enter your submission to the contest by May 18, 2018 and you may be selected to “shadow” one of these officials. Eight (8) MS/HS students and eight (8) Cayuga Heights Elementary students will be chosen for this great honor. The winners will then spend time with their government official counterpart, learning about their position, and participate in a Town Board meeting as that official, on the evening of May 29, 2018.
