EXPLORING is Learning for Life's career education program for young men and women who are 14-20 years old. Exploring's purpose is to provide experience to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults by emphazinsg Career Opportunities, Citizenship, Leadership Experience, Life skills and Character Education.
There are different Exploring Programs based on different career paths.
Depew Fire Department Explorer Post #37 - Participating in fire service is a great way to boost self-confidence and experience success at school and work. Explorers make new friends and learn skills that will last a lifetime. For more information contact Josh Swigonski 716-444-1600
Cheektowaga Police Explorers - The Police Explorers is an organization for youth ages 14-20 from Cheektowaga and surrounding towns and villages, interested in a career in law enforcement. The explorers learn the skills taught in the police academy through class room and simulated training as if they themselves are the officer. This program is designed not only to give these youths a chance to see if law enforcement is really the career that they want to go into, but also to give them a chance to learn, build a resume, and basically have a "one up" on others trying to go into this field. The program is ran by a Lt. from the police department, and 4 police officers with the Cheektowaga Police department who volunteer time to teach and train the explorers. This program is very successful as 3 of the 4 advisors were once explorers, we have at least 4 other officers in Cheektowaga that went through the program, 2 officers in Georgia, several in the CIA, FBI and Secret Service.
The explorers also get to attend national and local competitions with other explorers posts. We are looking to recruit some more explorers, and looking to the local schools for some help. If you have any students interested feel free to refer them to me, our Facebook Cheektowaga Police Explorers Post 464, or the Community Crime Prevention office at 897-7293.
