Bonjour et bienvenue à l'étude de français à DHS.  Hello and welcome to the study of French at DHS.

Contact infoEmail me or call the main office at (716) 686-5091 and leave a message.  I will get back to you A.S.A.P!

Courses:  This year, I teach French 3, French 4 and French 5.  Students in French 3 take a comprehensive exam in June! Students enrolled in French 4 and 5 have an option to register for college credit for these courses.  (French 4 is offered as ECC FR 112, 3.5 college credits.  French 5 is offered as ECC FR 113, 3. 5 college credits.)  There is a tuition fee (of about $250) associated with each course.  There is an approved college syllabus for this course.  It is available from me in room 220.  In January, a representative from ECC visits DHS to describe the registration process.  You can get information on the Advanced Studies Program at ECC by clicking here on the ECC Website.  If you have completed French 112 and/or 113, you may get your grade by logging on to the ECC website, going to webadvisor and looking for "grades" under current students.  (To log on, you'll need your ECC ID number and your social security number.)  Remember, if you attend a four year SUNY college/university, you will generally need foreign language credits to graduate!

My biography:  I am a graduate of SUNY at Buffalo (UB) and Buffalo State College (Buff State).  I have been teaching at Depew High for twelve years. I've lived and studied extensively in France and Quebec.  I have received scholarships for study abroad from the French Government, the American Association of Teachers of French and the NYS Association of Foreign Language Teachers.   Our LOTE ("Languages Other Than English") Department recently won the prestigious James E. Allen Award for Distinguished Foreign Language Program. I am a very active member of the Alliance Française de Buffalo.  They offer a lot of local events for francophones (people who like French!).  Click here to visit their website.

Materials: French 3 students use Discovering French, Blanc and its workbook.  French 4 students use Discovering French, Rouge and Contacts.  There are also accompanying CDs and DVDs for these texts.  French 5 students use many different texts and readers, available in class.

Online French practiceThe publisher of Discovering French has an excellent website with lots of practice opportunities.  Please visit their site called "Classzone" by clicking here.

Field trips:  We try to run an annual field trip in each level of French.  In French 3, we usually visit Fort Niagara in Youngstown, NY for the interactive exhibit The French on the Niagara.  In French 4 and 5 we visit the Albright-Knox Art Gallery to complete our art units.  Other field trips are run for members of the DHS French Club (see below).  Field trip permission slips are distributed in class, but a "generic" one can be printed below.

French Club: I am also the advisor to the DHS French Club.  We are a large and active club with monthly events, celebrations, activities and field trips.  We attend a sporting event each year and an end of the year international banquet.  We elect officers in June for the following year.  We sponsor an ethnic dessert fair and Valentine's Day chocolate sucker sale every year.  Our big fund raiser is our Fall Entertainment Book Sale.  We also run Community Nights at Wendy's Restaurant on Losson and Transit.  We receive 10% of the sales during that time!
