Mrs. Cierzo's third-grade class are participating in the national 3rd Gard Cabbage Program. The Bonnie Plants initiated the program in 1996 in Alabama and by 2002 it had become a national endeavor, shipping more than 1 million free oversized cabbage plants to third-graders in 48 states each year.

The mission of the program is to inspire a love of vegetable gardening in young people and grow our next generation of gardeners. If nurtured and cared for, kids can cabbages that may get bigger than a basketball, tipping the scales over 40 pounds!

Once grown, the biggest and best looking cabbage is selected, photographed and sent to the state Commission on Agriculture to choose that state's best cabbage and award a $1,000 prize.
