Staff and students worked hard this past month with STEAM integration at all levels. A few examples of their work involved coding in Mrs. Smith's class at Cayuga Heights Elementary and the start of a new STEAM based class at DMS.
The coding at Cayuga Heights, is taught in Keyboarding class by Ms. Leary. The students in Mrs. Smith's class choose to code when they have any down time!
At DMS, the new class is called Innovation Station and is taught by Mrs. Rosch. Eighth grade students take this elective voluntarily and will incorporate research & presentation skills, as well as technology throughout the year. The class began with students selecting a novel to read, which highlights resilience, and share with their peers.
Depew High School has been working on changing their Library Media Center into an area that classes and students can come to for group work, technology use, collaboration. The library currently features 3-D printers and a new circulation desk and will soon be the home of our STAT team. The STAT team is a group of students who are there to assist peers with technology needs, during lunch and study hall. Recently Mrs. Tylenda hosted a "stranger things" Breakout, where teams of students worked to solve problems to open locks. The successful team broke the locks and got a sweet surprise.
Our DMS teachers learned about new science software from 43 North winner Tyto Online. It is a game based program where students explore science concepts, research problems like a scientist and run simulations. This software will support our new science Curriculum at DMS.
