DROP OFF LOOP

Dear Cayuga Heights Elementary Parents:

In relation to the new Parent Drop-Off Loop, you may recall that the District completed a comprehensive safety and security audit in the spring of 2013. This activity was a response to the tragedy that occurred in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in December of 2012. The results of our audit indicated that we were in need of some critical adjustments, with regard to the level of access that we allow at our Elementary Building throughout the day; including parent drop off, visitations and parent pick up.

Due to these deficiencies, we will no longer have parents dropping off and picking up their children in the morning at the time school starts or during dismissal through the main entrance. Only those students, who ride the school busses, will be allowed to enter and exit the front doors of the building at the respective times.

Therefore, we have made the recommended adjustments for the safety and security of our children:

A. As part of the current capital project improvements, we have designed and established a new Parent Drop-Off Loop, which is located behind the Elementary building. Parents, who drop off their children in the morning, are encouraged to enter the service road entrance at the Transit Road location at the Bus Garage. Proceed on the service road to the back of Cayuga Heights Elementary School and enter the Parent Drop-Off Loop. For parents entering from the South and Como Park Boulevard, can proceed toward the Parent Drop-Off Loop and make a left turn into the loop. Parents are then expected to drop their children off at the curb of the loop. Once your child(ren) are dropped off, you can proceed out of the parking lot via the service road toward Como Park Boulevard.

B. If, as a parent, you have a need to enter the building with your child in the morning between the hours of 8:45 a.m. and 9:15 a.m., you will need to enter the Parent Drop-Off Loop in the same manner as previously stated, but then park your car in one of the available Parent-Only parking spaces. (There are seven (7) Drop Off spaces located in the loop and nine (9) longer-term parking spots located across from the loop.) If those spots are filled, you can feel free to park in one of the thirty (30) Parent-Only parking spaces located in the Front Parking lot and then proceed to the back of the building via the crosswalk and sidewalk around the building. You will then need to enter the designated cafeteria door and sign-in with the greeter. Proper identification is required and you will receive a visitor’s badge for your time in the building. Once you are finished with your visit, you will need to sign-out and return your visitor’s badge.

C. If, as a parent, you have a need to visit the building during the hours of 9:15 a.m. and 3 p.m., including picking your child up during the school day, you will need to park in the front parking lot and park in one of the designated Parent-Only parking spaces. PLEASE NOTE: Parking in the Fire and/or Bus Lanes is strictly prohibited and will be subject to ticketing. You will need to enter the front doors and be greeted in the front vestibule by the designated security guard and sign-in. Proper identification is required and you will receive a visitor’s badge for your time in the building. Once you are finished with your visit, you will need to sign-out and return your visitor’s badge.

D. Finally, if as a parent, you have a need to pick up your child in the afternoon between the hours of 3 p.m. and 3:20 p.m., you will need to enter the Parent Drop-Off Loop in the same manner as previously stated, but then park your car in one of the available Parent-Only parking spaces. Again, if those spots are filled, you can feel free to park in one of the thirty (30) Parent-Only parking spaces located in the Front Parking lot and then proceed to the back of the building via the crosswalk and sidewalk around the building. You will then need to enter the designated cafeteria door and sign-in with the greeter. Proper identification is required and your child will be waiting for you in the multi-purpose room for pick up.

Please know that the changes to these specific procedures are necessary for the safety and security of all of our children, faculty and staff. As these procedures are new, it will take some time to become part of the normal operation of the school environment, but with the entire school-community’s cooperation, together we can promote a safe environment for all.
