Cayuga Heights Elementary School will get a new inclusive swing, courtesy of a prominent local businessman. Russell Salvatore presented the nearly $9,000 check to the school on Thursday, to cover the costs of the swing.
The swing is in memory of former CHE student Shane L. Norton III, who lost his battle with cancer in April 2024.
Shane’s kindergarten and first-grade teacher, Carol Reiner, and his counselor, Alexandra Geary, started the Swing High with Shane project to raise funds for an inclusive swing, as a way to honor and remember him as the accepting and phenomenal person they say he was.
“He was the most charming, fun-loving kid,” said Reiner. “His sense of humor was outrageous, he was one big smile and hug.”
Salvatore stepped in after hearing about the effort, committing to pay the entire amount.
“I love giving back,” Salvatore said. “And if they need anything in the future, I want you to come and ask me. I'll help you make this the finest park in Depew."
Shane's family was in attendance for the big day, and said they were so thankful to both the school and Russell Salvatore for preserving Shane's legacy, and allowing this vision to come to life.
"The swing and the generous donation that made it possible — mean the world to our family," said Samantha Nowacezwski, Shane's mother. "Having a swing dedicated in his memory, one that every child can enjoy, feels like the perfect tribute to his kind and inclusive spirit."
“We are so appreciative to Mr. Salvatore for this generous donation to keep the memory of Shane alive for years to come,” said Jeffrey R. Rabey, Ph.D., Depew UFSD Interim Superintendent of Schools.
