Depew High School AP Government students helped bring local history to light through their work on a new historical marker recognizing the Seawall Society, an established Irish immigrant community that once lived along Buffalo’s Outer Harbor.
Led by instructor Maria Hoch, the students researched the Seawall Society and its history as part of the William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s Pomeroy Education Program. Their student-led grant application helped support the creation of a marker honoring the community, which was displaced by industrial development between approximately 1883 and 1914.
The City of Buffalo submitted the required materials for the historical marker on the students’ behalf. The inscription recognizes the Seawall Society’s place in Buffalo history and includes a special acknowledgment of Depew High School.
Congratulations to Mrs. Hoch and the DHS AP Government students for their meaningful work in preserving and sharing this important piece of Western New York history.
