AN AWESOME PARTNERSHIP – ATHLETICS AND ACADEMICS

Success in life is something frequently mentioned to our student-athletes by their parents, their teachers and their coaches. Measuring it is done in a variety of ways. At Depew our teams have significant victories while in uniform, yet in the classroom, they are also our winners.

Season after season, athletes have above average grades when compared to those students who are not participating in athletics. This accomplishment is especially noteworthy when the workload of the student-athlete is reviewed. The balance between a heavy practice/competition schedule and a serious time commitment to the classroom is extraordinary.

PHYSICALS

DOWNLOAD THE SPORTS PHYSICAL FORMS

Students in grades 7 – 12 who wish to participate in the Depew School District’s sports program must have a current physical examination and have on file with the nurse the Pre-Participation Medical History Questionnaire and the Health Certificate/Appraisal Form prior to the start date of their respective team. The Pre-Participation Health History questionnaire MUST be completed and signed by a parent in two places and must be brought to physical. The Health Certificate / Appraisal Form also REQUIRES a parent signature.

Student athletes may also get a physical from their primary care physician and return the forms to the school health office prior to the first practice. They cannot participate without a physical. Announcements concerning physicals are heard in the buildings, seen on posters, and heard from coaches, as well as posted on this website. Approved physicals can be obtained in the high school and middle school at set dates with the school physician and/or from your personal physician.

No student will be allowed to practice without a physical and a Medical Review (health history) card on file. The school physician has final say in determining physical eligibility for athletic participation.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETE TEAMS

In 1991, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association established the Scholar Athlete Awards Program to acknowledge the blend of the rigors of athletics and the demands of academics. To qualify for this award, a varsity team, using a designated number of members, must have an overall grade point average of 90% or above.
